The emblem of Israel
Israel , officially the State of Israel , is a country in the Southern Levant region of West Asia . It is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. Israel's western coast lies on the Mediterranean Sea , its southern tip reaches the Red Sea , and to the east is Earth's lowest point near the Dead Sea . Jerusalem is the government seat and proclaimed capital , while Tel Aviv is Israel's largest urban area and economic centre .
The Land of Israel , also called Palestine or the Holy Land , was home to the ancient Canaanites and later the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and Hasmonean Judea . Located near continental crossroads , its demographics shifted under various empires. 19th-century European antisemitism fuelled the Zionist movement for a Jewish homeland , which gained British support with the 1917 Balfour Declaration . After World War I , Britain occupied the region and established Mandatory Palestine . British rule and Jewish immigration in the leadup to the Holocaust intensified Arab-Jewish tensions , which escalated into a civil war after the 1947 United Nations (UN) Partition Plan . Amir Shmuel Blumenfeld (; Hebrew : אמיר שמואל בלומנפלד ; born January 18, 1983) is an Israeli-American comedian, actor, writer, television host , and member of the American comedy duo , Jake and Amir . Born in Israel, he moved to Los Angeles when he was two, and was hired by the New York City-based CollegeHumor in 2005. As well as contributing to its books and articles, he has written and starred in original videos for the comedy website—appearing in series such as Hardly Working and Very Mary-Kate —and was a cast member on its short-lived MTV program The CollegeHumor Show .
Amir first came to national prominence in 2004 when he was a semi-finalist during Yahoo's inaugural national IM Live contest, losing to the eventual champions. Now, he is best known for appearing in the web series Jake and Amir with Jake Hurwitz , in which he plays an annoying and exaggerated version of himself. Originally made by Hurwitz and Blumenfeld in their spare time, the series was then produced by CollegeHumor. Blumenfeld's acting in the series gained him a Webby Award for Best Individual Performance in 2010. (Full article... )

Haifa ( HY -fə ; Hebrew : חיפה , romanized : Ḥayfā , IPA: [ˈχajfa] ; Arabic : حيفا , romanized : Ḥayfā , IPA: [ħaj.faː] ) is the third-largest city in Israel—after Jerusalem and Tel Aviv —with a population of 297,082 in 2024. The city of Haifa forms part of the Haifa metropolitan area , the third-most populous metropolitan area in Israel. It is home to the Baháʼí Faith 's Baháʼí World Centre , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and destination for Baháʼí pilgrimage .
Built on the slopes of Mount Carmel , the settlement has a history spanning more than 3,000 years. Over the millennia, the Haifa area has changed hands: being conquered and ruled by the Canaanites , Israelites , Phoenicians , Assyrians , Babylonians , Persians , Hasmoneans , Romans , Byzantines , Arabs , Crusaders , Ottomans , and the British . The earliest known settlement in the vicinity was Tell Abu Hawam , a small port city established in the Late Bronze Age (14th century BCE). In the 3rd century CE, Haifa was known as a dye-making center. Haifa el-Atika , 5km northwest of Tell Abu Hawam, is the former site of Haifa as it existed between the 11th–18th centuries. In the late Ottoman period, in the 1760s, Haifa el-Atika was relocated 2.5 kilometres (1+ 1 ⁄2 miles) to the east as a new, fortified town, today known as the Old City of Haifa . During and after the Battle of Haifa in the 1948 Palestine war , most of the city's Arab population fled or were expelled and the Old City was subsequently demolished. That year, the city became part of the then-newly-established state of Israel. (Full article... )
Matzah balls or matzo balls are Ashkenazi Jewish soup morsels made from a mixture of matzah meal , beaten eggs, water, and a fat, such as oil, margarine , or chicken fat . Known as knaidel in Yiddish (Yiddish : קניידלעך , romanized : kneydlekh pl., singular קניידל , kneydl ; with numerous other transliterations), they resemble a matzah meal version of Knödel , bread dumplings popular throughout Central European and East European cuisine .
Matzah balls are traditionally served in chicken soup and are a staple food on the Jewish holiday of Passover . However, they are not eaten during Passover by those who observe a prohibition on soaking matzah products . (Full article... )
