| List of Palestinians |
This List of Palestinians is of notable Palestinian people. Approximately 12 million people today identify as Palestinian.[1] as defined in the Palestinian National Charter of 1968.[2]
This list is chronologically restricted to the period since the creation of Mandatory Palestine in 1920, and definitionally restricted to the modern national rather than the merely geographical meaning of Palestinian. As such, it does not include Palestinian Jews[3] or other Israeli citizens who may be native to the geographic region of Palestine, unless they identify and are recognised as part of the Palestinian national collective. Today, "almost all Palestinian Jews identify themselves as Israelis."[4]
For a list of notable people from Palestine, not bounded by the modern national definition of Palestinian, and prior to the British Mandate, see List of people from Palestine (historical region).[5]

- ↑ According to Rashid Khalidi, the modern Palestinian identity encompasses the heritage of all ages from biblical times up to the Ottoman period. (Rashid Khalidi, Palestinian identity: the construction of modern national consciousness, Columbia University Press, 2009 p.18.) According to Palestinian author Walid Khalidi: "the Palestinians considered themselves to be descended not only from Arab conquerors of the seventh century but also from indigenous peoples who had lived in the country since time immemorial." ("(With reference to Palestinians in Ottoman times) Although proud of their Arab heritage and ancestry, the Palestinians considered themselves to be descended not only from Arab conquerors of the seventh century but also from indigenous peoples who had lived in the country since time immemorial, including the ancient Hebrews and the Canaanites before them. Acutely aware of the distinctiveness of Palestinian history, the Palestinians saw themselves as the heirs of its rich associations.") and according to Palestinian anthropologist Ali Qleibo: "in their customs and manners, fossils of these ancient civilizations survived until modernity—albeit modernity camouflaged under the veneer of Islam and Arabic culture." ("Throughout history a great diversity of peoples has moved into the region and made Palestine their homeland: Canaanites, Jebusites, Philistines from Crete, Anatolian and Lydian Greeks, Hebrews, Amorites, Edomites, Nabateans, Arameans, Romans, Arabs, and European crusaders, to name a few. Each of them appropriated different regions that overlapped in time and competed for sovereignty and land. Others, such as Ancient Egyptians, Hittites, Persians, Babylonians, and Mongols, were historical 'events' whose successive occupations were as ravaging as the effects of major earthquakes ... Like shooting stars, the various cultures shine for a brief moment before they fade out of official historical and cultural records of Palestine. The people, however, survive. In their customs and manners, fossils of these ancient civilizations survived until modernity—albeit modernity camouflaged under the veneer of Islam and Arabic culture."
Genetic analysis suggests that a majority of the Muslims of Palestine, inclusive of Arab citizens of Israel, are descendants of Christians, Jews and other earlier inhabitants of the southern Levant whose core may reach back to prehistoric times.(Gibbons, Ann (October 30, 2000). [...] the term Palestinian is inclusive and refers to polytheistic ancient Palestinians as well as to Muslims, Christians, Jews, Samaritans, Arabs and other indigenised Palestinians. The term Palestinian also applies to Greek- and Syriac-speaking educational institutions in ancient Palestine and to the Palestinians as a whole under the Romans and Byzantines; both Greek and Syriac in Palestine had little to do with 'ethnicity' and ethnic Greek communities in the country; these languages were used by indigenous and indigenised Palestinians who would subsequently switch into producing language and literary works in Arabic under early Islamic rule, especially from the eighth century onwards.

Aref Shehadeh, 1892-1973 (later known as the historian Aref al Aref)2 whose public life spanned the late Ottoman, Mandate, Jordanian, and Israeli rules over Palestine. Since much of what he later wrote (histories, essays and diaries) constructed a nationalist discourse that was at variance with his earlier activities (and utterances) during World War I and the pre-war period, my purpose here is to re-examine this earlier period in order to understand how both the etymologies and trajectories of Syrian and Palestinian nationalism evolved.

In chapter 9, 'Humanism and Arab Nahda Education: Khalil Sakakini and Reforming Palestinian Education', we learn that Sakakini (January 1878–13 August 1953) was born in the Old City of Jerusalem. He was, Masalha writes, the epitome of the scholar-writer essayist-activist educationist and a great champion of humanist Arab nahda (renaissance) education.
