Soldiers in the United States Army
A Nepalese soldier on field training

A soldier is a person who is a part of an army. A soldier can be forced to join the army (called conscription) or volunteer to join.[1]

Names and types

There are many different types of soldiers: troopers, tankers, commandos, dragoons, infantrymen, guardians, artillerymen, paratroopers, grenadiers, rangers, snipers, engineers, sappers, craftsmen, signallers, medics, and gunners.[source?]

In many countries there are soldiers that have special names for other reasons. For example, military police personnel in the British Army are called "red berets" because their berets are red.[2]
